 Settings

This section will be heaviliy extended soon, as customization is a high priority for SkySketch.

General Settings:

Various settings, such as the menu scale, menu curvature and movement speed can be tweaked in the settings menu, with independent values for screen and VR mode. Try checking which sizes feel the most comfortable for you to work with!

If you accidently edited or deleted some of the included standard brushes and want them back, you can use the "Restore Resources" button to do this. Not that any existing files with the same filenames as the resources content will be overwritten, so make a backup if you added something on your own that you don't want to risk losing, or put it in a separate folder before running the command.

Performance can be enhanced by opting for a lower undo step or purge threshold setting. Lowering the purge threshold means that internal cleanup operations will happen more frequently. This can enhance your overall performance, but while the cleanups are executed, there may be a small freeze each time - usually just a small moment, if noticeable at all. This will happen once every few minutes, depending on the setting.

Hotkeys:

Key/Button remapping will be available shortly. The list of default keys can be viewed here: Hotkey List.

SkySketch VR Input Settings:

The "VR Input" Settings section lets you switch between left and righthanded mode (which is unneeded for Vive Controllers, but important for other controller types such as the Index Knuckles!). You can also swap between a visor and a handheld style for the main menu. Offsets for both, the position and the ray from your VR controller can be tweaked in detail. Presets for a range of common headsets will be available soon.

If you ever tweak settings to the point of breaking in VR mode, try going back to screen mode to undo that - and vice versa. The "Default Settings" button at the bottom allows you to restore all SkySketch settings to their default value.

VR Mode
Pressing the V key or clicking VR on the main menu's top bar seamlessly toggles VR and screen mode at any given time.

SkySketch allows you to keep using your tablet to paint even in VR mode if you prefer it over VR controllers. This also makes it possible to enjoy SkySketch in VR for users with headsets that lack room tracking and/or VR controllers.

Make absolutely sure to clear the area around your tablet of anything that could easily be pushed off the desk by accident, and tripple check that there are no drinks you could easily knock over.

Please see the information about SkySketch's VR Input Settings in the Settings section above.

The application is SteamVR-based and currently being developed on/tested with a HTC Vive and Valve Index setup. Other VR controllers may work, but are not yet officially supported and optimized.

SteamVR Settings for SkySketch

These are the recommended SteamVR Settings. You may have to turn on Advanced Settings in the lower left corner of the SteamVR Settings to see some of them.

- Turn off motion smoothing if the menu seems hard to read or "wobbly/watery".

- Try a lower refresh rate if you're low on performance. SkySketch is not an action game, so chances are you may not notice it much - it can make a massive difference! Try 90 hz.

- Try setting your render resolution 100% for further performance improvements if needed, especially if your headset has a high resolution to begin with. Going lower than 100% is not recommended unless absolutely neccessary, as it has a strong visual impact.

FAQ & Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting, General:

If the cursor input appears to be misplaced or the color selection wheel does not appear to work, try running SkySketch in fullscreen. [To be fixed shortly]

If you often find yourself accidently switching to diffent applications because your mouse/tablet goes past the SkySketch window by accident, try enabling the "Lock Mouse" feature in the Settings menu. This will prevent the cursor from accidently leaving the SkySketch window. You'll still be able to unlock the cursor by using the Windows key or Alt+Tab at any time.

Troubleshooting, VR:

If a VR setting made further access to the settings difficult (for example, you've scaled down the menu to a point where it's hard to read/reach), remember that you can always toggle VR mode on the fly and adjust the setting to a less extreme value in screen mode.

If your VR controller is tracked according to SteamVR but won't respond in SkySketch, try exiting and re-entering VR Mode (V Key r via Main Menu) again. If that doesn't help, try restarting the application.

Known Issues:

Slow load times using the integrated file explorer when opening a brush directory for the first time after starting SkySketch and especially when browsing and loading panoramas. This will be improved shortly through caching of thumbnails.

Performance:

For VR performance improvement, try the SteamVR settings shown above. You can further improve performance inside and outside of VR by lowering the Purge Threshold and Undo Step settings in the SkySketch settings, as explained at the top of the page.

Hardware Compatibility:

SkySketch is currently being tested with the classic Vive Wand and Index Controllers. Different headsets should works as long as they run via SteamVR, but controller configurations may not be ideal. Presets for various Headsets will be added shortly.
